2006 album from the Canadian band recorded the way April Wine used to record: pure analog! Two inch tape, 24-track recording, with half-inch 2-track master tape. No digital equipment during the entire process and the result speaks for itself. There are eight studio recordings penned by founding member Miles Goodwyn with the exception of ‘’Night Life’’, which is a cover of the Willie Nelson penned country classic.
Once the crowds have gone home, musicians get to play for themselves. Like it or not, thats the position in which fading CanRock legends April Wine find themselves these days. But to their credit, they make the most of that newfound freedom on their latest disc Roughly Speaking.
This lean, no-frills set -- the 16th studio release of the bands 36-year career and their first disc since 2001s Back to the Mansion -- is an impressively varied and adventurous offering.
Sheila is a nice slice of bouncy Beatle-pop. You Dont Even Know (How I Love You So) has a 50s doo-wop feel. If Youre Coming (Im Out of Here) is a back-porch country ditty. A bluesy cover of Willies Night Life ups the roots factor. And the 70s-style power-pop of I Am, I Am, along with the bluesy Roller-boogie of Saw Someone (That Wasnt There) shows Myles Goodwyn and co. still like to rock now and then.
At just 25 minutes, its a little slight. But roughly speaking, its one of April Wines more interesting comeback efforts.
