and Scorpion Sound, London, England between February & June 1974. All tracks
have been digitally remastered. The punishment befits the crime, and a quarter
of a century later, Supertramp have been forgiven by critics. Quite why they
induced such negative press seems unjustified, as Bloody Well Right and
Dreamer sound as fresh as ever. The electric piano cuts through the speakers
like a knife through butter, the treble at times hurting the ear like a heavy
rock guitar solo. Both Hodgsons and Davies voices sound rich and confident,
although both are quite different. Maybe the pace slackens with the slightly
indulgent If Everyone Was Listening and the title track, but there are enough
musical highlights to recommend this for any would-be progsters wants list.

been McCartney-esque pop elements in Supertramps accessible brand of art-rock
from the beginning, EVEN IN THE QUIETEST MOMENTS represents a definitive shift
from proggier tendencies towards a more commercial approach. Coming as it did
before the bands major commercial breakthrough, BREAKFAST IN AMERICA, it
foreshadows that albums straightforward pop-rock approach, while still
retaining a touch of the early artiness. While Fools Overture has a bit of
the weightiness one ordinarily associates with 1970s prog, the fragile,
contemplative title track and From Now On betray a fondness for the softer
side of 60s Britpop. Give a Little Bit, which would become one of
Supertramps signature songs, is a sunny, acoustic-guitar-driven tune that would
sound at home alongside almost any 70s Los Angeles folk-rock act. The bands
big crossover was just around the corner, but all the earmarks of their breakout
can be heard here.

California. Often forgotten, and when finally remembered it is usually for the
often tedious, but huge-selling Crime Of The Century. This record cuts away the
pomp and keeps it comparatively simple with some memorable pop songs and lyrics,
for example, in the title track a simple statement, take a look at my
girlfriend, shes the only one Ive got, or the ridiculously simple rhymes in
The Logical Song, and the painful truth of Goodbye Stranger and Take The
Long Way Home, which are further irritatingly catchy songs. Sadly Supertramp
were not able to build on this excellent collection although they still have a
loyal following.
