'Journey / In The Beginning: 1975-1977 (January 1980) Remaster (2009)' Review!
Soon after leaving 'Santana', and trying a hand at owning a restaurant, singer-organist, Gregg Rolie received a call from former fellow 'Santana' bandmate, Neal Schon, guitarist to get back together and start their own band, which later became 'Journey'. Joining them from the band, 'Frumious Bandersnatch', were bassist, Ross Valory and six-string-slinger, George Tickner, and to round things out on the drums from 'The Tubes', Prairie Prince, who quickly returned to that band to make room for journeyman, Ansley Dunbar, who has drummed for any and everybody in the Rock world who has ever been famous in the last 40 years! In any case, between the years of 1975 and 1977, the band released three long-play albums of Rock-Jazz Fusion, barely snagging a piece of the charts. Then, roadie turned manager, Herbie Herbert, decided to add a frontman to ease pressure off of Gregg Rolie, and add some spice of life to the already dynamic proportions the band had. That man, singer, Robert Fleischmann, didn't turn out to be the one to take them where they had hoped to be going, and then came a guy named, Steve Perry, and the rest is history, as they say...So, gone were the excellent jams, and the Pop charts were made more accessible, but I attest to the fact that not everyone, certainly not every fan who had followed the likes of Gregg and Neal from 'Santana', were pleased with this sudden shift for the charts, and yet the core was there all along. That's what YOU, the listener, can find out for yourself on these grooves now brought to a remastered CD and store near YOU. Songs like 'Spaceman', 'On A Saturday Nite' & the George Harrison 'Beatle' cover of 'It's All Too Much' are right up there with the best of any of the Pop songs that ensued in this great band's illustrious career. And yet, nothing after ever came close to the prowess and perfection of songs like 'Of A Lifetime' (One of the greatest songs ever written!), 'Kohoutek' or the title cut off of their second album, 'Look Into The Future'. Three epics that should be in every music lover's collection, no doubt! So, pun intended, journey back with me and enjoy the beginnings of that legendary Pop-Rock Icon, 'Journey', and astound at the Progressive guitar jams, the amazing drum interludes, and the downright nasty organ solos from one of Rock's most endearing bands of all time.
