Description

'George Harrison / The Complete 'Beatles' Recordings, '63-'70 (November 29, 2008)'!

In Asia, many Eastern religions believe that after seven years those dearly departed ones will reach a level of enlightenment and perfection, to truly become one with the gods. I may not support such a belief, but it has been my belief that the music that George Harrison recorded with the 'Beatles' was just as bit as good as anything that John Lennon & Paul McCartney composed. It is also, the reason, and not simply the fact that he was in the 'Beatles', that I continued to follow his career until 2001. Since then, I, like all of YOU, have had to cherish what the man has left us with, only hoping that there are some lost tapes, or forgotten treasures hidden or stashed away somewhere in an attic, basement or garage somewhere. In any case, the powers that be have chosen to commemorate the seventh year since Sir George's passing with a nice 3CD set. This is the first, George's 'Complete 'Beatle' Recordings' from 1963-1970, which means all of the official releases on one very compact disc of omniscient inertia. So, reminiscent to '1', YOU have all of George's best songs like 'Something', sadly his only A-Side 'Beatle' release, along with 27 other cuts ranging from magnificence a la 'I Want To Tell You', 'I Need You' & 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' to his Indian-influenced tracks like 'Love You To' from the 'Yellow Submarine' film as well as the single B-Side, 'The Inner Light'. Yes, they truly are all here, and with the very limited addition of the 10,000 edition bonus disc, which includes nine of George's earlier, released later, recordings with the 'Beatles', and the three instrumentals that he and members of the band wrote and recorded together, including his very first composition while touring with Tony Sheridan, 'Cry For A Shadow' YOU truly do have them all! So, if YOU ever really wondered what the 'silent one' had to say while with the 'Beatles', or if YOU simply like having everything together in one place then this 320KBps upload is the one for YOU! Remember George, and happy holidays! - Rick Wilson, former Rock Radio Journalist with Radio Canale Grandé.

01) Chains (Please, Please Me) 1963 **** It may be hard to hear, but yes, George is the lead vocalist on this one!
02) Do You Want To Know A Secret? (Please, Please Me) 1963 ***** It must be nice having friend's like John Lennon & Paul McCartney to loan YOU a song now and again!
03) Don't Bother Me (With The Beatles) 1963 ***** George's first self-penned tune!
04) Roll Over Beethoven (With The Beatles) 1963 ***** Excellent Chuck Berry cover!
05) Devil In Her Heart (With The Beatles) 1963 **** She may have had the 'Devil In Her Heart', but this song is heavenly!
06) I'm Happy Just To Dance With You (A Hard Day's Night) 1964 **** George's 1st movie song!
07) Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby (Beatles For Sale) 1964 **** Nice Carl Perkins cover!
08) I Need You (Help!) 1965 ***** Excellent! Should have been a single!
09) You Like Me Too Much (Help!) 1965 ***** Yes, we do, George!
10) Think For Yourself (Rubber Soul) 1965 ***** My son's favourite, and another nice one from the 'Yellow Submarine' songtrack.
11) If I Needed Someone (Rubber Soul) 1965 ***** Certainly a single, if George was the leader of the 'Beatles'!
12) Taxman (Revolver) 1966 ***** John counts off one of my absolute favourite Harrison songs!
13) Love You To (Revolver) 1966 ***** This is why George experimented, because this is so cool!
14) I Want To Tell You (Revolver) 1966 ***** George's creme de la creme of Pop, and a quite nice guitar, too!
15) Within You, Without You (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band) 1967 ***** This lengthy number boasts one of George's best written lyrics! But, do YOU get it?
16) Only A Northern Song (Sgt. Pepper out-take; Yellow Submarine) 1996; 1968 **** George Martin may have abhored this one, but there is a method to George's madness!
17) Blue Jay Way (Magical Mystery Tour) 1967 *** This may be George's weakest song, but it was his 1st video!
18) The Inner Light (single; Past Masters, Vol. 2) 1968 (1988) ***** By this point, Macca insured that this excellent tune would not be on the follow-up, 'White Album', but this is an excellent mix of cultures and the Arts in all its fantasm!
19) While My Guitar Gently Weeps (The Beatles aka The White Album) 1968 ***** Again, George's masterpiece (And, not a bad one on the résumé of Mr. Eric Clapton, as well!) that should have been a single, in any other universe surely. I joined fellow Lennon vigilists in singing this one as the lone Harrison tune in a sea of Lennon on December 9th, 1980.
20) Piggies (The Beatles aka The White Album) 1968 ***** Charles Manson may have misunderstood George's satirical take on life in the materialistic sense, but this one is still cool with its mellotron, etc.
21) Long, Long, Long (The Beatles aka The White Album) 1968 ***** Another great ballad that seems to be plagued only by a bad recording.
22) Savoy Truffle (The Beatles aka The White Album) 1968 ***** It's groovy, man! I'm thinking Alice Cooper nicked this one on 'Unfinished Sweet'!
23) Old Brown Shoe (single; 1967-1970 aka The Blue Album) 1968 (1973) ***** Groovy beat's a bit dated, but still moves one!
24) It's All Too Much (Yellow Submarine) 1969 ***** Another lengthy number, and again, from the 'Yellow Submarine' cartoon!
25) Here Comes The Sun (Abbey Road) 1969 ***** This actually was the 1st song on the cassette version of 'Abbey Road', should have been a single, and, if YOU haven't already, check out George singing in duet with Paul Simon on www.youtube.com to this one, and 'Homeward Bound'!
26) Something (Abbey Road) 1969 ***** Frank Sinatra, great persona that he was, once called this the best song that Lennon & McCartney ever wrote! George actually wrote this one for Joe Cocker, who released it before the 'Beatles', and it took some urging from John to get George to do a version, as well! Thank God for small favours! One of the 'Beatles' best, and the best reason why George Harrison should never be forgotten! 'Nuff said!
27) For You, Blue (Let It Be) 1970 ***** No, 'Elmore James has nothin' on this one', George!
28) I, Me, Mine (Let It Be) 1970 ***** Classic, final song the 'Beatles' as a group ever worked on!

Bonus Disc (November 29, 2008)

01) Cry For A Shadow (Anthology 1) 1962; 1995 *** Nice fret work for a young lad from Liverpool!
02) Three Cool Cats (Anthology 1) 1962; 1995 ***** I love the humour that this one parleys! Parlez vous Francais?
03) The Sheik Of Araby (Anthology 1) 1962; 1995 ***** Speed Rock anno 1962! These latter two songs were chosen by Brian Epstein with a dozen or so others to help get the 'Beatles' their 1st record contract!
04) Young Blood (Live At The BBC) 1962; 1994 **** Nice 'Coasters' cover written by that famous Rock 'n' Roll writing duo of Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller with Doc Pomus!
05) Crying, Waiting, Hoping (Live At The BBC) 1962; 1994 **** Buddy Holly covered well by Mr. Harrison!
06) Nothin' Shakin' (Like The Leaves On The Trees) (Live At The BBC) 1962; 1994 ***** Eddie Fontaine cover, and one of my favourite sayings! So, now YOU know the rest of the story! lol
07) Glad All Over (Live At The BBC) 1962; 1994 ***** Carl Perkins covered yet again, by the 'Beatles'!
08) You Know What To Do (Anthology 1) 1964; 1995 *** A George Harrison demo that sat on the shelves, thanks to the other George, the 6th 'Beatle' and producer, George Martin, for more than 30 years until finally being released in 1995. This one is unique, in that Jimmy Nichol plays the drums, due to an ill Richard Starkey aka Ringo Starr.
09) 12-Bar Original (Anthology 2) 1965; 1996 *** I think these instrumentals were added to simply bridge the gap between early recordings and latter, but George did get a writing credit.
10) Flying (Magical Mystery Tour) 1967 **** See comment to number 9, number 9, number 9...
11) Not Guilty (Anthology 3) 1968; 1996 ***** No, George isn't guilty! This was my favourite bootleg 'Beatles' tune until George released his own version in 1979, but I still prefer this one.
12) All Things Must Pass: demo version (Anthology 3) 1969; 1996 ***** Well, if YOU thought Macca's 'The Long & Winding Road' or 'Let It Be' were too sorrowful a way to end the 'Beatles' partnership then it's good that George saved this melancholic version for a revamp of pep through Phil Spector's great, infamous 'Wall of Sound'. Still, having said that, this somber demo take sums up what all of us felt in early 1970 (Thanks, Ringo!), and should remember, as George would have wanted - live for Today, because it is all fleeting, so make George (and Jack) proud by making each second of your life count, Rose! Somewhere in England, and somewhere out there I can hear a snicker now from the man who also loved a good, humorous film a la 'Monty Python'! God bless YOU, George Harrison!
